Lost Your Passion For Work

Eat, sleep, work, repeat… If that sounds familiar then it’s likely you’ve fallen out of love with your job. After two years of Covid challenges, it is understandable that you may have lost your drive, are stressed, bored, feel under-appreciated or maybe you’re not challenged enough. We’ve all had time to reflect on what we want our futures to look like, so if your heart isn’t in work anymore, the 9-5 days can feel like they are never going to end.

The pandemic gave all of us an opportunity to really consider what we want out of life; to re-evaluate our talents and re-assess our purpose and what makes us happy. The world has changed beyond recognition and our working lives are no different. It could be now that you are more interested in social, green or political roles, want to climb the career ladder or perhaps want to work less to spend more time with your family.

It can be unnerving to have lost your love for your job, especially if it was one you previously enjoyed. Before you join the ‘Great Resignation’ that is currently happening, start by asking yourself if your spark is permanently out or if it just needs reigniting? Think about whether you felt isolated at home, missed the social interactions, were overworked, didn’t feel supported or weren’t motivated working on your own.

The obvious solution would be to quit and pursue other opportunities, but make sure that it is 100% right for you as the grass isn’t always greener. Alternatively take stock of what you used to like about your job and whether you can get those elements back; it could be that you just need to rediscover and rekindle with your job again. Do you need to do more collaborative work, do you want to work with a mentor, go on a training programme or do you need a night out with your colleagues to re-establish your relationships?

Your job is so much more than a pay cheque, it is a big part of your life, so you need to make sure it is right for you, your family and your lifestyle. There is a big difference between being disinterested or unmotivated and falling completely out of love with it. Some people have never had a passion for their work, but we think that it is important to be enthused with what you do as it will have such a positive impact on other areas of your live if you are fulfilled. Not sure what to do next? Take some time out, have an honest conversation with colleagues, managers, family and friends and make the distinction between whether you have fallen out of love with your job forever or just need to reignite your passion for it. Only then can you be sure to make the right decision.
